TikTok release new privacy protections for teens: Only user’s approved followers can view videos

TikTok, the most popular short video-sharing application has applied many new privacy policies after its popularity and this time again, it has implemented new settings or policies and controls to better protect its teen users. 

According to the Press Release, TikTok has once again implemented a new setting according to which teens under the age will be protected. The announcement says that the new changes include all accounts to be defaulted for users of the platform between the ages of 13 and 15 to private and their comments will be limited to friends-only or no one. 

As per the statement, the user can change these settings to public in order to make their videos viewable to all. “By engaging them early in their privacy journey, we can enable them to make more deliberate decisions about their online privacy,” the release reads.

Likewise, the “Suggest your account to others” setting will be switched off by default for them.  

Moreover, there are some other changes too according to which, comment section for users ages 13-15 to friends-only or no one at all. Whereas, users of ages 16-17 will only be allowed to download videos. There would be default settings on Friends only.  

However, the statement further reads that they are on to build the previous updates in order to promote youth safety that includes hosting live streams to users 16 or more than this age limit and restricting direct messaging.

According to PR, this video sharing platform will further put more restrictions by putting strict policies on buying, sending, or receiving virtual gifts to users of age limit 18 or above. The policy will enable a Family Pairing feature that will allow parents or guardians to set guardrails on their teen’s TikTok.
