India has banned TikTok among other popular 59 apps that were designed by Chinese developers. The Indian government claims that these apps were continuously violating user policy, stealing users data, and threatening the country’s sovereignty.
India’s banning of the apps came amid the Ladakh border row. The relations of the two countries further deteriorated after the Galwan incident when Chinese and Indian forces came face to face and 20 Indian soldiers were killed by the PLA troops along with senior CO of a battalion.
Among 59 applications TikTok was the most famous application which is created by ByteDance a technology company whose headquarter is in Beijing, China. In the month of February 2020 TikTok was downloaded 46.6 million times only in India, and at the moment sitting at the second spot after Facebook on Play Store in application ranking.
TikTok was previously removed from Apple App Store and Google Play Store over the allegation of spreading pornographic content but later on, after some amendments from TikTok in its policy it got back.
This move is seen as a major retaliation by India and no country has banned so many mobile applications of another country.
Responding to the action by India, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, “China is strongly concerned, verifying the situation”.
“We want to stress that the Chinese government always asks Chinese businesses to abide by international and local laws-regulations. The Indian government has a responsibility to uphold the legal rights of international investors including Chinese ones,” Zhao Lijian said.
