Precautionary Measures During Winter Season 

As we all know that the winter season is just around the corner. So one should be prepared for all the years during winter season in order to stay safe and healthy. 

During winter season, cold temperatures can be fatal, so one can stay safe. As winter comes with no surprise, many people might not be ready for the arrival. He is more likely to stay safe and healthy during low temperatures. 

Prepare Your Home During Winter Season

If you need to keep your home warm and safe, you should follow the following steps: 

  • Install insulators and storm windows  
  • Clean out all the gutters and repair any roof leakages 
  • You should also check your heating system  
  • Service your heating systems professionally and make sure they’re clean, working correctly and ventilated to the outside  
  • Do a proper inspection and cleaning of fireplaces and chimneys 
  • Have a safe and alternate heating source 
  • Install a working smoke detector in your home  
  • You should also avoid carbon monoxide poisoning emergencies  
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector to check the presence of deadly odorless and colorless gas. 
  • Be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning includes headache, dizziness, weakness, upset, stomach, vomiting, and chest pain
  • Avoid using too much heater as it can cause carbon monoxide poisoning  
  • Make sure to turn off heater and stoves before sleeping
  • Never use a stove to warm up your home as it can be fatal

Prepare Your Vehicles

  • Serviced radiator before winter season  
  • Check your tires, replaced them with all weather or snow tires if you are someone living in snowy areas
  • Repair a winter emergency kit and keep it in your car in case you face any emergency. The kit must include the following items: 
  • Mobile phone portable charger and extra batteries  
  • Items to stay warm such as some extra hats, mittens, blankets, sleeping bags, food and water 
  • You should have a flashlight, battery powered radio, first aid kit  
  • Some plastic bags  
  • Tire pump, and a bag of sand   

Prepare Yourself For Emergencies

You must get yourself prepared for weather related emergencies, including power, outages  

  • Stock in some food that means no cooking and can be stored in clean containers easily  
  • Make sure that your cell phone is fully charged and also keep a power bank with you 
  • Before travelling, always check, weather forecast and conditions and plan accordingly 

Keep Your Family Safe From Carbon Monoxide

  • Grills, generators and gas should be used out of the living room, basement or garages
  • Place generator at least 20 feet away from the house 

Take Care Of Your Skin

Skin is the largest organ on your body and during winter season, gets extremely dry. Therefore, proper most protection is needed to be done. 

  • Apply moisturizer daily, especially after taking showers 
  • Use warm water or try to take a steam bath 
  • Apply hand lotion especially whenever you wash your hands 
  • Wear socks to avoid dry feet 
  • Don’t forget to apply sunblock during winter sun 
  • Moisturize your lips with chapsticks to avoid dry lips 
  • Drink a lot of water to avoid dehydration 
  • Take care of your nails and hair 
  • Use honey and other natural moisturizing agents

Clothing For Winter Season

During winter season, outdoor activity can expose you to safety hazard. Follow the steps to avoid these hazards: 

  • Wear appropriate clothing when you are going out 
  • Wear warm blazer, long coats, sweaters, and jackets to avoid cold temperature
  • Wear a hat, scarf, mittens and waterproof boots 
  • Always keep a pair of mittens in your purse and a raincoat as well 
  • If there is rain, never forget to take an umbrella with you 

Food During Winter Season

During winter season, you can take food which can warm up your body and help to keep yourself vital during winter season 

  • Use dry fruits such as almonds, pistachios, cashew nuts, apricots and raisins
  • Eat fish, meat, soup, broths and halwas made in desi ghee preferably 
  • Use warm drinks such as tea and coffee
  • Also take fresh seasonal fruit juices on daily basis 
  • Soak in a lot of sun  
  • Eat a lot of oranges as they are rich in vitamin

Travelling Precautions During Winter Season

  • While travelling, be aware of current and forecast weather conditions 
  • Avoid traveling when there is an emergency call and motorways are closed.  
  • Make sure you tell a friend or a family member about your proposed route and expected time of arrival

    If you are stranded, follow these: 
  • Make sure your vehicle is visible to rescuers. Tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna, raise the hood (if it is not snowing), and turn on the inside overhead lights (when your engine is running) to make yourself visible. 
  • Move all things that you need from your trunk to passenger area  
  • Keep yourself warm and don’t turn on car heater for too long in car which is not moving. It can cause CO poisoning. 
  • Wrap up your entire body, including your head, in extra clothing, blankets, or newspapers.  
  • Huddle with other people if you can to avoid cold. 
  • Stay awake and stay moving.  
  • Moving will make your body less vulnerable to cold-related health problems 
  • Movement will keep your blood circulating.  
  • Make sure that snow is not blocking the exhaust pipe in order to avoid CO poisoning.
