Pakistan, China to ‘further strengthen cooperation’ for COVID-19 vaccine development

On Friday, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi met his China counterpart Wang Yi in China’s Hainan province where further strengthening the cooperation in developing a vaccine to defeat the COVID-19 pandemic was agreed upon.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi met Chinese Wang Yi and according to a joint statement issued on Friday following the second round of China-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue in Hainan Province, China, Qureshi and Wang “Exchanged views on COVID-19 pandemic, bilateral relations, and international and regional issues of mutual interest, and reached consensus to collectively take measures to safeguard their common interests and promote peace, prosperity, and development in the region”.

Moreover, the statement further noted that China and Pakistan have been friends in need and stood in solidarity and worked together since the coronavirus pandemic outbreak and now vowed to work together for Covid-19 vaccine development. Both countries have set the example for the international community of mutual support in providing medical materials to each other and both helped to stop the spread of the virus to a greater extent.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi took to Twitter and posted, “Always a pleasure to meet State Councilor & FM Wang Yi and to strengthen the deep bonds shared between Pakistan and China. Together we will continue to safeguard our common interests and promote peace, prosperity, and development in the region.”

Moreover, it was clearly recognized that both of the country’s unity and cooperation proved to be the most powerful weapons against the disease. They called for the international community to “increase the sense of a community of shared future and carry out effective joint prevention and control measures in order to mitigate the negative effects of COVID-19”.

However the statement further added, “Both sides reiterated that the enduring China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership is beneficial to international and regional peace and stability, and serves the mutual security and development interests of both countries as well as of the international community and regional countries”.
