Two of the six Army officers, nominated by General Head Quarter for the post of Chief of Army Staff, bid farewell to Pakistan Army by seeking early retirement.

Pakistan Army’s Chief of General Staff (CGS) Lieutenant General Azhar Abbas and Lieutenant General Faiz Hamid-former intelligence chief and current commander of Bahawalpur Corps, have decided to bid farewell to Pakistan Army by seeking early retirement. The two three-star Generals were listed among the six Army officers nominated by General Head Quarter for the post of Army Chief. Revealed sources.

The news came out today when younger brother of Lt. Gen Azhar Abbas , London based Barrister Dr Mazhar Ilahi confirmed it to Geo news. “ I confirm that Lt. Gen Azhar Abbas has sought early retirement to maintain his grace, honour and dignity as a decorated officer of Pakistan Army”, he said. It was further confirmed by a trusted family source who said, “ known for his professionalism, farsightedness and leadership, Lt. Gen Azhar Abbas has decided to seek early retirement-true to his personality”

The news of retirement of Lt. Gen Faiz Hamid came a day after the news of early retirement of Lt. Gen Azhar Abbas as confirmed by the family source. Both of the army men performed exceptionally well during their military career. Lt. Gen Azhar Abbas Gen Azhar Abbas will become number two on seniority list after November 27,2022. He was commissioned by Pakistan Military academy in year 1987 in 41 Baloch Regiment. During his decorated career, he has served as personal secretary to the former chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Shareef. He has commanded 12 Division Murree and was commandant of infantry school, Quetta. Before becoming CGS, he was commander of 10 Corps.

While confirming the news of his early retirement the source said, “ The institute and this nation would miss him. He served and commanded troops from Line of Control (LOC) to Waziristan, from Baluchistan to Northern Areas in his career spanned over 40 years”

As far as the military career of Gen Faiz Hamid is concerned, it is noteworthy that he was director General of inter service intelligence (ISI) while Imran Khan was the Prime Minister. He has served as Corps Commander Peshawar and as GOC 16th infantry Division Pano Akil. On April 12, 2022, he was promoted to the rank of Lt. General and was appointed as adjutant general at General Head Quarter (GHQ) later that month.

The news of early retirement of both of these army officers came two days after Federal Government appointed General Asim Muneer as the new Chief of Army Staff and General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).
