KP becomes first province to approve bill against heavy school bags for children

KP School Bags

The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa approved the KP School Bags (Limitation Weight) Act to control the heft of schoolbags on Wednesday.

Shahram Khan Tarakai the Provincial Minister for Education posted on Twitter that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the first province that introduces such regulation.

Furthermore, the minister also stated that due to this legislation it will provide greater relief for children and parents.

“I am glad to announce that the provincial cabinet has approved the KP school Bags (Limitation Weight) Act today which will to regulate the weight of School Bags. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the first province to introduce such legislation. A long due relief for children & parents,” he wrote.

As per the new legislation accepted by the KP government the allowed weight of school bag for

  • Pre-Grade-1 1.5kg
  • Grade-1 2.4 Kg
  • Grade-2 2.6 kg
  • Grade-3 3 kg
  • Grade-4 4.4 kg
  • Grade-5 5.3 kg
  • Grade-6 5.4 kg
  • Grade-7 5.8 kg
  • Grade-8 5.9 kg
  • Grade-9 6 kg
  • Grade-10 6.5 kg
  • Grade-11 7 kg
  • Grade-12 7 kg

The newly accepted law will be applicable to all the educational institutions that include public, private, seminary, autonomous, semi-autonomous and other functioning in the province.

The heavy bag culture needs to be eliminated from our system as according to doctors hefty bags lead towards stress, physical discomfort and exhaustion among kids and therefore affect their concentration which leads to low ability to learn.
