With the intention to promote educational and cultural exchange between the United States and Pakistan, 189 students have been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarships to acquire advanced studies and research at leading US universities.
According to the sources, the awardees will begin their higher education journey at 82 universities this fall in different disciplines, including energy management, environmental studies, and social sciences.
Fulbright is the flagship scholarship program of the United States Government, working in 160 countries. Pakistan has the biggest Fulbright program in the world regarding US government contribution, using $18.44 million dollars this year to support 189 students.
This depicts the US commitment to our cooperation in Pakistan, now marking our 75th anniversary. The Government of Pakistan, via Higher Education Commission, also supports a huge number of Ph.D. scholarships.
Moreover, this year’s 189 students of the Fulbright scholarships had a two-day pre-departure orientation organized by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) in Islamabad to prepare them for the journey, their exchange programs, life at university campuses, and American culture.
Meanwhile, US Ambassador Donald Blome acknowledged the grantees for their accomplishments. “Pakistani Fulbrighters have solved social problems, written new laws, advanced policies to ensure equal access and voices to all, and so much more. They do this all for one purpose: to create a better, safer, and more prosperous Pakistan. In this goal, the United States and Pakistan are united.”
He stressed that the United States invests in education as it strengthens the American association with Pakistan, creates stability in the region, and leads to shared economic prosperity.
Moreover, this year, 125 Masters and 64 Ph.D. i.e. 31 Fulbright Ph.D. and 33 Fulbright-HEC Ph.D. students and 7 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) fellows were chosen for these awards. Half of them are women according to press release by US embassy. The scholarship includes travel, living stipends, health insurance, and tuition for the complete study period.
