The way towards digitization is in the development phase in Pakistan’s mega-project CPEC as the new optical fiber project is operationalized which will connect the Transit Europe-Asia Terrestrial Cable Network with Pakistan.

China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Chairman and Special Assistant to Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan on Information and Broadcasting, General (Retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa said in a statement that new fiber optics cable initiated from Khunjerab to Islamabad is now operationalized. According to the plan, in the next phase, optical fiber cable from Islamabad will be connected to Karachi and Gwadar Port.

General (Retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa announced this news via Twitter account tweeting, “New optical fiber cable operationalized from Khunjerab to Islamabad, next phase will be laid from Isd to Kci & Isd to Gwadar as part of digital highway plan, foundation for digital/IT revolution-project being processed in conjunction with China”.

Details of the optical fiber cable project

The optical fiber project is 820 km long and is being built as part of the CPEC project with a cost of $44 million between Khunjrab Pass and Islamabad.

This newly optical fiber line operationalized will connect the Transit Europe-Asia Terrestrial Cable Network with Pakistan, which transfers stream of internet traffic through four underwater fiber optic cables, remaining three fiber optics cables are also under process.

The project was started in 2018 and covers 466.54 km of area in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, 267.66 km in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province (KPK), 47.56 km in Punjab province and 18.2 km in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT).

Asim Saleem Bajwa also shared news of current developments in Gwadar city and Gwadar port. Gwadar International Airport construction is also under process.
