Anemia is the deficiency of blood in the body. It can happen when the body stops making red blood cells due to some medical condition or when bleeding occurs and the person loses red blood cells very quickly.
The major cause of disease happens when the body destroys red blood cells. It is caused by blood loss like an ulcer, cancer and regular other pains. But there can be many other reasons for anemia and they can even be a person’s negligence or self-made mistakes. On the other hand, the occurrence of anemia is unknown at the start, a person feels weakness with no other apparent symptoms but it internally damages a person and might become a silent killer.
Iron deficiency is the first cause. This is the most common type of anemia that occurs due to iron deficiency in the body. Hemoglobin is made by the bone marrow through iron and iron is essential to produce hemoglobin for red blood cells. Iron deficiency mostly occurs in pregnant women, due to food choices, heavy physical activities and due to some accident.
Medication, on the other hand, can also be the cause of this condition. According to studies, self-medication is harmful and when medicines are taken in some pain or simple cramps or headaches, they damage the gastric wall and increase the risk of bleeding that can lead to anemia.
Childbirth is a big cause of blood loss because blood is lost during childbirth and excessive blood loss leads to anemia. However, the growth of the baby in the mother’s womb depletes the iron of the mother and in this way, the mother’s blood becomes iron deficient.
When the body does not absorb enough vitamin B12 and if food is consumed that is less in vitamin B or folate, pernicious, even then anemia can develop. People who do diet to quickly lose weight are also the ones who may suffer from anemia.
When red blood cells are destroyed faster than bone marrow can replace them with new red blood cells, certain blood diseases increase and destruction of red blood cells start. In this condition, hemolytic anemia is developed or it can develop later in life.
Common diseases that interfere with the production of red blood cells include diabetes, HIV/AIDS, lupus, cancer, and other infections. Inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease may also lead to anemia.
Treating the condition can be done through oxygen intake, pain relievers, and oral and intravenous essential fluids to reduce pain and prevent complications. Doctors might also recommend folic acid supplements, blood transfusions and antibiotics to treat the issue.
Food can also help regain the lost red blood cells but no one food will cure anemia. Eating an overall healthy and balanced diet rich in dark, leafy greens, seafood, meat, nuts and seeds, lentils and beans can help you get the iron you need to manage anemia and regain strength.
