Taking antidepressants can be part of treating depression. It works in balancing chemicals in the brain called a neurotransmitter that is effective for mood and emotions. Such medication helps in the improvement of better sleep, improves mood and, to better the concentration level and appetite. Antidepressants help in jump-start mood. It often allows the brain to start the things to enjoy again or start making better choices that is one of the positive contributions.

Antidepressants and tranquilizers are the keys to treating depression and also helps in preventing depression from coming back again. Some people do not believe these medicines and some depend on them and consider them an essential part.

They are effective for severe and moderate chronic depression but they are not implied for mild cases. But, like other drugs, they have side effects too. Pros and cons should be kept in mind while taking antidepressants.

The main aim of antidepressants is to treat depression like to cope with sadness and exhaustion to prevent them. Such medicines are intended to restore emotional balance and keep oneself on a normal social track of everyday life. These medicines are also used to relieve restlessness, suicidal thoughts and, anxiety or sleeping disorders. Antidepressants are used in the most common type of depression which is unipolar depression.

The nerve cells in the brain use several chemicals to pass on impulses. According to experts, the imbalance of certain chemicals that affect nerve connections causes depression and antidepressants increase the availability of such chemicals but the other drugs do it in different ways and that is how antidepressants are more effective.

Depression can be resolved by many medicines and in many other ways. But, the problem comes in the prediction of a particular medicine that is really effective on an individual. Every physician recommends the most effective medicine at the very initial stage to test the effectiveness and tolerance level of individual and according to the result, medicine is switched. From time to time, drugs are changed when no effective result is observed in the patient.

The benefit of the drugs depends on the severity of depression. The more severe the depression, the more chances of benefits are. Antidepressants are effective for moderate, chronic and, highly out of control depression but mild depression is not treatable through such drugs.

According to the survey, adults with severe and moderate depression when experimented; 20-40 out of 100 people took the placebo (no antidepressant) were noticed in the improvement in their symptoms within few hours i.e. 7-8 hours while adults of 40 -60 out of 100 were given antidepressants. Their improvement was noticed within 6-8 weeks. This means antidepressants improve the symptoms in about 20 more people out of 100.

However, they have side effects too. Antidepressants lead the person to dizziness, mood swings, sweating, and body pain. Few people get heart problems due to the consumption of antidepressants daily. Liver damage is another side effect. Teenagers should consult psychiatrists instead of consuming too many drugs that can destroy their health.
