Technology is getting advanced and excessive use of smartphones or digital devices are having negative effects on people’s vision and health.

High energy smartphones, tablets, and computer screens are viewed all the time by people to use them on a daily basis which is causing serious harm to their vision. Too much time spent in front of screens is leading towards digital eyestrain and a variety of issues related to eyes like itchy or tired eyes, dry eyes, blurred vision, and burning eyes. Moreover, headache, fatigue, neck or body pain and difficulty in vision are other causes of using electronic devices for too long daily.

Technology is continuously evolving that is making children more indulged in computer devices. Every room contains computers and every person has a smartphone or tablet. Kids keep on using computer devices all day long whether for studies or for extra activities like games and watching videos. Parents have become the least concerned about their children using computer devices for too long. They think their children are getting knowledge, but they do not release that the extensive exposure to radiation emitting from screens is destroying their clear vision and health.

Too much time spent on electronic devices brings various vision-related problems. According to research, many eyes related issues are caused because of the exposure of blue light. Blue light is the brightest light from the visible light spectrum that directly contacts the eye and causes harm.

If the person faces blurred vision, if he squints his eyes all the time, if he rubs his eyes persistently, if his eyes are red, tired or itchy and of is he has a headache after using computer devices, then these signs mean that the person is affected by the computer harmful rays.

These days, everyone is bound to use computers. The modern system of education demands a student to find his problem’s solution by the internet, each office work is computer-based that demands them to stare at the screen until the work is done. More than half of the employees of computer-based jobs in Pakistan have glasses on and are suffering from weak eyesight. Students who use computer devices all the time, ultimately start wearing eye-sight glasses.

It was estimated that in 2050, nearly half of the world’s population will be suffering from low vision and one billion of them will have severe weak sight.

Due to excessive use, the negative effects of digital devices include both serious social and health issues like eye strain, attention deficit problems, obesity, and social isolation. Computer Vision Syndrome is a condition found mostly in adults that can be caused due to persistent focusing on a computer screen for uninterrupted periods of time. It includes headache, the difficulty is focusing, blurred vision and fatigue, back neck pain, shoulder pain and difficulty in focusing on small text.

The four most common eye conditions leading to loss of vision or blindness are:

  • Cataracts.
  • Diabetes-related retinopathy.
  • Glaucoma.
  • Age-related macular degeneration.

We all need to look at our daily routine and fix the times for electronic devices usage which has entangled us. Start with your children and check your child’s excessive computer usage every month. Never use computer devices in dark, because the blue light emitting from the screen affects the eyes and disturbs the sleep cycle. Sit at arm’s length from smartphone and computer. Turn off all electronic devices two hours before sleep time. Blink 15 times a minute while using a computer device. Use 20-20-20 rule that is to take a gap of after every 20 minutes and stare something at 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Take care of your eyes by consulting doctors.
